Zigbee vs Wi-Fi for Smart Home in Pattaya

Zigbee vs Wi-Fi for Smart Home in Pattaya

When building a smart home, it is important to choose the right type of devices. Wi-Fi devices look simple: connect them to the router, add them to the app and start using them. But when the number of devices grows, the network can become overloaded.

Zigbee works differently. Devices connect not directly to the router, but through a Zigbee coordinator or gateway. This reduces the load on the Wi-Fi network and makes the system more stable, especially in villas, large houses, condos and properties with many sensors.

Main difference between Zigbee and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi devices use the home internet network. Every lamp, socket, relay or sensor takes a place in the router network. If there are many devices, especially cheap Tuya Wi-Fi modules, delays, disconnections and unstable automations may appear.

Zigbee devices work in a separate network. They need a separate Zigbee coordinator, for example Sonoff ZBDongle-P, SkyConnect or ConBee. Through this coordinator, sensors, relays, switches and other devices connect to Home Assistant or another control system.

When Zigbee is better

  • motion, door, temperature and humidity sensors;
  • wireless switches and buttons;
  • water leak sensors;
  • relays and lighting control modules;
  • a large number of devices in one property;
  • villas, houses and condos where stability is important;
  • Home Assistant based systems;
  • reducing the load on the Wi-Fi router.

When Wi-Fi is also suitable

Wi-Fi devices are not always a bad option. They can be used where there are only a few devices or where the equipment works well through the local network. For example, some Shelly LAN and Wi-Fi devices, controllers, cameras, control panels and integrations can work well in a smart home system.

The problem starts when the whole property is built only on cheap Wi-Fi Tuya devices. For a small number of sockets or simple tasks this may be acceptable, but for full villa, house or large condo automation, the system architecture should be planned in advance.

Why many Wi-Fi devices can become a problem

  • the router has too many connected devices;
  • devices may disconnect from time to time;
  • automations may work with delay;
  • some devices depend on a cloud server;
  • after a power outage, not all devices reconnect quickly;
  • if the internet is unstable, app control may also become unstable;
  • the system becomes harder to maintain if devices are from different brands and clouds.

Advantages of Zigbee for smart home systems

  • less load on the Wi-Fi network;
  • convenient for many sensors;
  • many devices can work from batteries for a long time;
  • possible to build a local system with Home Assistant;
  • suitable for lighting, water, climate and safety scenarios;
  • the system can be expanded step by step;
  • a good option for villas, condos and rental properties.

Important: Zigbee is not the same as Tuya Hub

For a proper Home Assistant system, it is better to use a Zigbee coordinator instead of a regular Tuya Hub. A Tuya Hub often keeps the system dependent on the Tuya or Smart Life app.

In Home Assistant, Zigbee devices connect through a coordinator. This allows a more local and flexible system, where sensors, switches, relays and automations work inside the property, not only through the cloud.

Best solution for a new property

For a new smart home, it is better not to build everything on one type of device. The practical solution is to combine technologies:

  • Zigbee — for sensors, buttons, switches and some relays;
  • LAN — for servers, network equipment and stable controllers;
  • Wi-Fi — only where it is justified and does not overload the network;
  • Home Assistant — as the main control center;
  • a good router and access points — for stable operation of the whole system.

What can be done on site

  • check existing Wi-Fi, Tuya, Smart Life and Zigbee devices;
  • understand which devices can stay;
  • choose a Zigbee coordinator for Home Assistant;
  • separate devices by logic: lighting, water, climate, pumps and safety;
  • reduce the load on the Wi-Fi network;
  • move important automations to a local system;
  • prepare the system for future expansion.

Where this is especially important

  • villas with many rooms;
  • houses with pumps, swimming pools, water heaters and several air conditioners;
  • condos with lighting, water and climate automation;
  • Airbnb and rental properties;
  • houses that already have many Wi-Fi Tuya devices;
  • properties where stable operation is needed without constant failures.
