A smart home without cloud dependency is a system where the main automations work locally inside the property: in a house, villa, apartment or condo. Lighting, air conditioning, pumps, water leak protection, sensors and other devices do not fully depend on external Tuya, Smart Life or other cloud servers.
This approach is especially useful for villas, rental properties, condos and houses in Pattaya, where stable automation is more important than simply controlling a few lamps from a phone.
In a typical Tuya or Smart Life system, commands often go through the internet and an external server. If the internet is unstable, the server is unavailable or a device loses cloud connection, control can become delayed or stop working.
In a local smart home system, the main control center is a Home Assistant server installed inside the property. It controls devices directly through Zigbee, LAN, local integrations and automations. The phone is used as a convenient interface, not as the main control center of the system.
A large number of Wi-Fi devices can overload the router and the network. In a small condo this may not be obvious, but in a villa or a larger property with dozens of devices, delays, disconnected devices and unstable automation can become a real problem.
For a new system, it is better to use Zigbee, LAN devices, Shelly, Home Assistant compatible equipment and a proper network infrastructure. Existing Wi-Fi Tuya devices can stay if they are already installed and working, but new important parts of the system should be made more stable.
Home Assistant is installed on a separate server inside the property. It can be a mini PC, a dedicated smart home server or another suitable device. The server processes automations, stores settings and connects different devices into one system.
For Zigbee devices, a Tuya Hub is not used. Instead, the system needs a Zigbee coordinator, for example Sonoff ZBDongle-P, SkyConnect or ConBee. Through this coordinator, sensors, relays, switches and other devices work inside the local smart home system.
Yes, in many cases old Tuya Wi-Fi devices can stay. They can be connected through Tuya integration or LocalTuya if the device is supported. But it is important to understand that full local operation depends on the exact device model.
A practical approach is not to replace everything at once. Existing devices can stay until the end of their service life, while new lines, important control points and critical automation should be built on Zigbee, LAN or equipment that works properly with Home Assistant.
