IR control allows appliances that use a regular infrared remote control to be connected to a smart home system: air conditioners, TVs, fans, audio systems and other home appliances.
This is a convenient solution for apartments, condos, villas and rental properties in Pattaya where existing appliances are already installed, but phone control, scenes and Home Assistant integration are needed without fully replacing the equipment.
IR control works like a regular remote control, but the command is sent by a smart IR controller instead of a person. It sends an infrared signal to an air conditioner, TV or another device.
After setup, appliances can be controlled from a phone, smart home scenes, Home Assistant or voice control if the system supports it.
In Thailand, IR control is most often used for air conditioners. If an air conditioner is controlled by a regular remote, in many cases it can be connected to a smart system through an IR controller.
After setup, it may be possible to turn the air conditioner on and off, change the temperature, operating mode and fan speed, if these commands are correctly supported by the specific AC model and IR controller.
In condos, IR control is convenient because it does not always require changes to the electrical system or replacement of existing appliances. Air conditioners, TVs and other equipment can be controlled through a compact IR controller.
This is suitable for personal use, rental properties and objects where control needs to be improved quickly without major renovation.
In a villa, IR control can be used for several air conditioners, TVs and lounge areas. Scenes can combine climate control, lighting, pool, terrace and other systems.
For larger properties, correct placement of IR controllers is important because the infrared signal must “see” the device. If appliances are located in different rooms, separate controllers are usually needed for different zones.
IR controllers can be integrated with Home Assistant if the selected equipment is supported. Then air conditioners, TVs and other devices can be added to general smart home scenes.
For example, Home Assistant can use IR control together with temperature sensors, schedules, buttons, Zigbee devices and other integrations.
IR control does not always provide feedback from the device. This means the system can send an on or off command, but may not always know the actual status of the appliance.
Controller placement is also important. If the IR signal does not reach the device, the command may not work. Before installation, the room, appliance position and possible obstacles should be checked.
In rental properties, IR control is especially useful for air conditioner control. The owner or manager can remotely turn off a forgotten AC, prepare a room before guest arrival or create a simple checkout mode.
For rental use, the system should remain simple. Guests should still be able to use a normal remote or clear manual control, even when the smart system is configured.
After setup, existing appliances can be controlled more conveniently: from a phone, through scenes, schedules or the main smart home system.
This helps use already installed equipment and add automation without fully replacing air conditioners, TVs or other appliances.
For stable operation, it is important to choose the right controller, installation position and integration method with the main property system.
