When grounding should be checked

• you feel an electric shock or tingling from a shower, faucet, sink or water pipe;
• a water heater, washing machine, pump or appliance body gives an electric shock;
• an RCD or circuit breaker trips repeatedly;
• the property has an earth wire but its condition or connection is unknown;
• electrical work or renovation has recently been completed;
• an EV charger, water heater, pump or other high-load equipment is being installed;
• the electrical panel or grounding electrode has been altered, damaged or corroded;
• you need an electrical safety assessment before buying or renting a property.

What we test and inspect

• earth electrode and earthing system condition where accessible;
• earth resistance using a suitable grounding test instrument and method;
• continuity of accessible protective conductors and PE connections;
• electrical panel, grounding bar and protective conductor connections;

Why visual inspection is not enough

A green-and-yellow wire or a visible grounding rod does not by itself confirm that the protective conductor is continuous or that the earthing system has a suitable measured result.

Grounding assessment combines visual inspection with electrical testing. The appropriate measurement method depends on the earthing arrangement, available access and how the grounding system is connected. The result is evaluated for the actual property and equipment rather than against an unexplained universal number.

Earth resistance and PE continuity are different checks

Earth resistance testing assesses the grounding electrode or grounding path using an appropriate test method. Protective conductor continuity testing checks whether the PE path between accessible parts of the installation remains connected.

These checks answer different questions. An RCD test is also a separate part of the assessment. Where applicable, grounding, protective conductor continuity and protective device operation should be considered together.

Electric shock from water or equipment

An electric shock from a shower, faucet, water heater, washing machine, pump, socket or metal equipment body may be caused by missing or damaged grounding, electrical leakage, incorrect wiring, an equipment fault or unsuitable protection.

Stop using the affected equipment. Do not touch wet electrical equipment, exposed wiring or an open electrical panel. Switch off the affected circuit only if it can be done safely. Active sparking, smoke, visible melting or a strong burning smell may require urgent electrical assistance.

Grounding for EV chargers and high-load equipment

EV chargers, water heaters, pumps and other high-load equipment must be assessed for the actual supply, circuit, protective devices and grounding arrangement before connection.

For an EV charger, we check the protective earth path, grounding result, cable, breaker, RCD or DC leakage protection requirements and the instructions for the specific charger model. The charger should not be commissioned if the required protective conditions are not suitable.

Grounding repair options

After testing, we explain which part requires attention. Depending on the finding, work may include restoring an accessible PE connection, repairing or replacing a damaged grounding conductor, correcting an unsuitable panel connection, servicing the grounding electrode, or recommending changes to the RCD, breaker, circuit or connected equipment.

The exact repair is confirmed after the earthing arrangement and measured results are known. We do not recommend replacing components before identifying the cause.

How the grounding check works

1. Describe the symptoms and send photos of the panel and affected equipment.
2. We inspect the electrical panel, protective conductors, equipment and accessible grounding components.
3. Suitable electrical measurements are performed for the site arrangement and reported problem.
4. We explain the results and identify whether repair, protection work or equipment service is required.
5. After agreed corrective work, the relevant connections and protection are checked again.
